Pueblito Paisa is a replica of a traditional town from Antioquia, and is one of the most popular attractions in Medellin.  This small cobblestone square has a typical church, a couple of houses, souvenir shops, and a place to grab a traditional meal or snack.  This popular attraction displays the traditional architecture from this region of Colombia, allowing us to see a glimpse of how people lived years ago.

 

Day Trip to Guatapé

Guatapé is a famous town located about 2 hours outside of Medellin.  Not only is the drive beautiful, but there are so many things to do while you’re here, such as visiting the colorful town, boat rides on the reservoir, ziplining, buying fun souvenirs, and just enjoying the architecture.  However, the most important thing to do in Guatapé is climb the famous el Peñón staircase, which consists of 740 steps.  Once you’re at the top, you can take beautiful pictures, enjoy the view, drink a michelada, or just relax before visiting the town.

Colombia is the second most biodiverse country in the world, meaning there are many exotic fruits here that you’ve probably never tried before.  By trying local produce, you can better understand where some of the flavors in the traditional meals originate, and you’ll be excited to find that you can identify the different fruits that you see throughout the streets.  There are many places that you can go to find fresh fruit, but if you want a big selection, then head to one of the neighborhood markets and ask about the local selection.  Some of the fruits that you’ll likely find include granadilla, guanabana, lulo, maracuyá, pitaya, curuba, and much more.

Fernando Botero, a Colombian sculptor who’s known for his recognizable style, displays his work in Botero Plaza.  This area, located in downtown, has 23 different sculptures to visit, all within a small walking distance.  Although you can get downtown by taxi, you can also take the metro to better appreciate the efficiency of public transportation in this city.

 

Take a Flower Farm Tour in Medellin

Medellin is known for its beautiful and diverse flowers.  When you visit a flower farm, you’ll learn about the cultivation process, and you’ll also better understand just how important flower production is for the economy.  In fact, Medellin’s Flower Festival is a ten day festival that takes place every August to celebrate and showcase the amazing things that locals can do with flowers.  If you’re in Medellin in August, then the festival should be added to your must-do list; if not, a flower farm tour is a great option as well.
