Medellin is a city like no other. While you’re here, you’ll notice that there are so many things to do within the city, but there are also great destinations outside of it as well. Among the many nearby towns, you’ll notice a colorful and lively town called Guatapé. Here, there are many things to do, such as climbing the famous rock. Although it may seem intimidating, the view and experience are well worth it. Here’s what you need to know about the famous el Peñón de Guatapé steps.
History of el Peñón
One of the interesting things about this rock is that it’s become so popular, yet we don’t actually know why it exists. There are many theories, such as an ancient meteorite, an extinct volcano, and even legends about how the devil tried to take it and failed.
What we do know is that the rock is 656 feet tall and mainly composed of quartz, feldspar, and mica minerals. We also know that the rock itself is about 70 million years old, which plays even more into the mystery of it.
So, when did el Peñón start becoming popular? It all started in 1954 when two friends were encouraged by a local priest to make it to the top of the rock. Unlike us, they didn’t have convenient steps to climb. Instead, they inserted wooden planks into the cracks of the stone and made their way to the top.
The Famous El Peñón de Guatapé Steps Today
A lot has changed since the first explorers ventured to the top of the Guatapé rock. Since then, a proper staircase has been built, a shrine of the Virgin Mary has been incorporated into the rock about halfway up, and there are now vendors at the top-selling souvenirs, snacks, and refreshments.
The staircase consists of 740 steps, with which you’ll have a beautiful view the entire way. Many people often ask how long it takes, but that entirely depends on you. If you go at a decent pace and only take a couple of short breaks, you may reach the top in 15 minutes. If you take many breaks along the way to enjoy the view, it could take longer.
Once you reach the top, sit down and drink a michelada, eat a traditional snack, and take great pictures. Some people are happy spending the entire day at the top of the rock, while others make their way to Guatapé to enjoy a little more of the culture that the amazing town has to offer.
